Title A name given to the resource Louie and Ida Rivera Life History and Perspectives Description An account of the resource Louie and Ida Rivera, a married couple living in Barrio Hollywood in Tucson, Arizona discuss their life histories and comment on aspects of pachuco culture and its language, Caló. Louie was born in 1927 in Jerome, Arizona and after some time in the Navy, he moved back and worked in the Jerome mines. He recounts his youth as a pachuco, but notes that the culture started earlier in the 1930s among braceros coming from Mexico to work in the United States. Louie goes into detail about some of the aspects of pachuco fashion and defines terminology. Louie also talks about caló, calling it a street language. He then breaks down some of the differences between pachucos and cholos and talks about treatment by police and media. Later in the interview, Ida tells of her experiences growing up working to help her parents pay for her brother’s medical bills. She discusses how she learned caló from her husband, and how women were involved in the culture as well. Title A name given to the resource Mrs. Aurora Arrieta Dispute Between Cholos and Cholas, Chihuahua, Chihuahua Description An account of the resource A woman named Aurora Arrieta details a dispute she witnessed from her window at the Santa Regina Hotel in Chihuahua, Chihuahua. Ms. Arrieta explains that at around 11 at night, she heard voices on the street and a woman screaming. She looked out the window and saw a woman, who she describes as a chola, on top of a man, punching and hitting his face while he tried to guard himself with his arms. There were four cholos and three cholas surrounding them, watching. The women had weapons, a stick, and rocks. The women ran off before the police arrived, who eventually ended up taking three of the men into custody. After going down to the street and speaking with the police and other witnesses, Ms. Arrieta learned that the man had tried to take advantage of the woman, and she had managed, with the help of her friends, to defend herself and escape.
